Julia: I was hanging out with Rocio and one of her friends. We ended up at the Wreck Room and when we walked in her friend said, "No one is ever going to date him in that striped shirt." Rocio and I looked at the guy in the shirt and didn't see anything wrong with it. We were playing shuffleboard when they walked up and asked to play.
Travis: I was wearing a striped shirt...and going around town with one of my main guys, Mike. He and I were both single so we had no plans for Valentine's Day which happened to fall on a Sunday Funday. We typically end up in lower Haight, but I suggested we go out somewhere new. After moseying around Fillmore, we ended up on Polk at the good ol Wreck Room shooting some darts. Julia and Rocio were in the middle of a game of shuffleboard and I went up and asked if they wanted to play pool with us. When we were all on our way out I asked Julia if she had a boyfriend or if she would want to go out some time which was both surprising and an overly convoluted way of asking, but we did end up going out some time, and now we're here.
Travis: I had woken up in the middle of the night thinking about life and I was struck by the realization that I wanted to propose to Julia! And, I wanted to do it ASAP. The night was Monday. Julia was going out of town coming back Friday, and school was starting in a week so I wanted to do it on Sunday. I knew she had a family ring, so I just needed a ring for popping the question. I had to drive to get paint for work, so I used that as the excuse to roam around the peninsula looking for the ring. I ended up at a small jewelry shop in Pacifica where I found it. I texted Mike and Alexio, then called Jen and Jeanette. Everyone was able to come out, and both Jen and Jeanette played it super cool when they called Julia to "see if she wanted to hang out tomorrow". The picnic was ON, we were all hanging out, and when the moment came, Julia was 100% surprised!
Julia: I had brunch plans with Kristy. We were thinking about going to Stern Grove but Travis suggested a picnic in Golden Gate Park instead. I thought nothing of both Jen and Jeannette texting me asking to hang out on Saturday. Day of we were all hanging out at our spot near the baseball fields. Travis got up and walked awkwardly over to me and got on one knee. I may have yelled, "Is this happening for real?!?" Travis said, "I'm not tying my shoe." Then he just sat there with the ring out looking at me. Jen yelled, "You are supposed to ask her!" while I grabbed the ring out of the box.
Travis picked out this ring to propose with. He actually thought that the proposal ring was something the Bride wore during the engagement and took off once she was married. It is an Aquamarine stone with sterling silver. When Travis got the itch to propose he snuck off to Pacifica to buy something and told Julia he has to buy some things for Novy. He didn't realize there were hearts on it until his coworker pointed it out to him. He wanted to keep the ring since it was part of the story and it is now on a shelf in their living room.
This ring belonged to Julia's Great Grand Aunt and is from 1912. Julia's mother, Elaine, took the diamond ring for her engagement to Randy, Julia's Father. Later, Elaine put a sapphire in the setting and gave it back to her mother(Julia's Grandmother) to make up for losing her sapphire ring in 1962. Julia is the fourth generation of women in her family to wear some part of the original ring.
Travis wanted a ring to wear right away. He wanted one that wasn't just bought from some random jeweler. We went to several spots looking for a vintage ring but didn't find anything interesting. When we were up in Windsor we went to a jeweler on accident. We were looking for a vintage store but ended up at a place that has vintage jewelery. While Travis' ring isn't vintage the shop had an old school feel to it and the owner has an apprentice to pass on the craft. It's cobalt chrome with rosegold interior. It's inscribed with JHT for Julia, Hazel, Travis.
